Analyze Usage

The Google Analytics Platform lets you measure user interactions across various devices and environments. You can use Google Analytics to view detailed usage statistics of your school's Ellucian Mobile implementation.

For example, you can see the number of students that use the app in a particular date range. If numbers are below expectations, you can reevaluate your content to see what changes need to be made to drive usage that meets your expectations.

Google Analytics allows your institution to do the following:

  • Track the number of people who are using the app.
  • See what content users are viewing so you can track the level of user interest.
  • See which language is preferred by your users.
  • Understand the devices and input methods that your audience uses to interact with your content.

You can use the data gathered through Google Analytics to create metrics reports and analytics dashboards, and make data-driven recommendations to optimize marketing campaigns.

To begin gathering data, you must set up a Google Analytics account and then connect that account to your Ellucian Mobile configuration.

The Google Analytics SDK is delivered as part of the Ellucian Mobile code. With Google Analytics SDK, you can define custom dimensions to combine data in a different way than Google Analytics would automatically do. Ellucian Mobile defines two dimensions. You must follow the instructions to add these definitions to your Google Analytics project so that the Google Analytics server understands the additional data sent from Ellucian Mobile.

This additional data collected in custom dimensions is unique to Ellucian Mobile. The definition you add to your Google Analytics account must match exactly how Ellucian Mobile expects it to be defined. There are two custom dimensions defined:

  • The Configuration Name is the first custom dimension sent by Ellucian Mobile. If you only use one configuration at your school, this dimension may not be relevant to your reports, but you should set it so that Google Analytics uses the data sent. If you have more than one configuration, like a configuration for each different school or to distinguish between test and production systems, you can use this first custom dimension to look at only the data for configuration.
  • The Module Name is the second custom dimension sent by Ellucian Mobile. In the Google Analytics data, the Module Name captures the kind of screens viewed by your users. If you have more than one module of the same type, the screen view data lumps all those similar screen types together. For example, if you have web frame modules to allow the user to select multiple web pages from the menu, all those are counted together under the label “Display web frame.” However, for each one of those taps from the menu, Ellucian Mobile is capturing the name shown on the menu that the user tapped. This label from the menu is stored in the Module Name. When you include this dimension in your reports, you can see the items chosen from your menu and can get metrics on each different item in the menu.
